FAQs
Clear answers to common questions about VIKINGCARES Personal Health Plans, including eligibility, coverage, enrollment, and what to expect.
What is a VIKINGCARES Personal Health Plan?
The VIKINGCARES Personal Health Plan is a product of Viking Benefit solutions. It offers Health, Dental and Travel Benefits for individuals who have retired, aged out of benefits, lost benefits, or are looking for additional coverage.
Is coverage individual or combined?
Coverage is always individual, even under a family plan.
This means each person has their own benefits and maximums — nothing is shared or combined.
If you enroll as a family, everyone must choose the same plan tier (Silver, Gold, or Platinum). For example, if your family is on the Platinum Plan, each person receives their own $10,000 @ 90% prescription drug coverage.
Who can join?
If you currently have health benefits, or if your coverage ended within the last 90 days, you could join Viking Cares with guaranteed acceptance, no medical questions, and coverage for all pre-existing conditions. During this time, you may choose any plan level — Silver, Gold, or Platinum — with or without dental.
If it has been more than 90 days since your benefits ended, you may still be able to join during an Open Enrollment period. During Open Enrollment, enrollment is limited to the Silver plan, with or without dental.
Joining After 90 Days:
Members who join during Open Enrollment must remain in the Silver plan for a minimum of two years. After two full years of continuous coverage, members may choose to upgrade to the Gold or Platinum plan.
Can I pay with direct pay?
Yes. With VIKINGCARES, you can use direct pay for most services.
Your plan includes a convenient pay-direct system, so you won’t have to pay out of pocket for many common expenses. At the dentist, pharmacy, or paramedical provider, your provider can bill the plan directly—so you only pay what’s not covered.
You’ll also have access to a mobile app where you can view your coverage, check your balances, and submit any claims that can’t be billed directly.
Can I join if it has been more than 90 days from losing benefits?
Yes. You may still enroll in the VikingCares Personal Health Plan during an open enrollment
period — there is no longer a 90-day application window.
To be eligible, you must:
- Be between ages 18 and 79
- Be covered by a Canadian provincial health plan
- Meet the plan’s standard eligibility requirements
No medical questions are required, and all pre-existing conditions are covered.
Please note:
Members who enroll during an open enrollment period are limited to the VikingCares Silver
Plan, with or without dental coverage. Coverage selected at enrollment must remain in place
for a minimum of two years before changes to plan level can be made.
Do the prices online include tax?
Yes, the prices online include tax and all applicable fees. There are no additional charges.
I currently have active work benefits or another plan, can I purchase the VIKINGCARES Personal Health Plan as a secondary plan?
You can use the VIKINGCARES Personal Health Plan as secondary coverage.
If you already have work benefits or another plan, Viking Cares can provide extra protection by topping up areas where your current plan may be limited — such as prescription drugs, paramedical services, dental, or travel coverage.
Your primary plan pays first, and Viking Cares can help cover the remaining eligible costs.
How often can I expect a rate increase, and does the VIKINGCARES Personal Health Plan use the process of age banding?
VikingCares does not use age banding. Rates are the same for all members within the same plan level, regardless of age. Rates do not increase because of birthdays or benefit usage.
Premiums are reviewed on a plan-wide basis and, if required, adjustments occur at the annual January 1 renewal.
Can I change plans if my income or health changes, and will pre- existing conditions remain to be covered?
Yes. You can change plans, and all your pre-existing conditions will remain covered.
With Viking Cares, you’re never locked into the same plan for life. After you’ve been in your current plan tier (Silver, Gold, or Platinum) for two years, you can move up or down one tier based on your needs or budget. You can also add or remove dental at that time.
When you make a change, there are no medical questions, and all pre-existing conditions continue to be covered. Your coverage simply adjusts to the limits of your new plan tier.
I am retiring, and I am being offered bridging options for a period after retirement. What date do I need to sign up for the VikingCares Personal Health Plan?
If you are retiring and have temporary or bridging benefits, you should apply for VikingCares within 90 days of your work or bridging coverage ending to maintain access to all plan levels. If you apply later, you may still join during Open Enrollment under the Silver plan.
If I move to another province can I take my plan with me or do I need to apply for new coverage?
Viking Cares Personal Health Plans may continue if you move to another province where Viking Benefit Solutions Inc. is licensed and VikingCares is available. Members should contact the office prior to moving to confirm availability.
What happens if the primary member passes away can a spouse remain on the plan?
The surviving spouse may continue coverage as a single member without medical underwriting and without interruption of benefits, provided the surviving spouse is 80 years of age or younger.
If the surviving spouse is 81 years of age or older, they would not qualify to continue coverage under the plan.
Speak with one of our licensed agents when enrolling to review your options and avoid unexpected situations.
Is Travel Insurance Extra or Included on all of the plans?
Travel insurance is included with every VIKINGCARES Personal Health Plan — it is not an add-on and cannot be removed.
Here’s what you can expect:
Included Travel Coverage on Every Plan
- Silver & Gold & Platinum Plans:
- 90 days of emergency travel coverage per trip
- $5 million in coverage per trip (not lifetime)
No Stability Period — A Major Advantage
All plans now include travel coverage with no medical stability clause, regardless of age.
This means you are covered even if your health changes before your trip — a rare and valuable benefit.
Coverage to Age 80
- Travel benefits are included until your 80th birthday.
- If one spouse turns 80 and the other is younger, the younger spouse continues to receive full travel coverage until their 80th birthday.
Additional Coverage Options
If you need extended days, top-up coverage, or have special travel requirements, Viking can provide additional options. Just contact us before you leave your home province.
Are University and Disabled Children coverage available?
Yes. Both university-aged dependents and disabled children can be covered under your VIKINGCARES Family Plan, provided they meet eligibility requirements.
University Students
Dependents who are under age 25 and enrolled in a recognized post-secondary institution can remain on your Family Plan.
When they age out, they’ll have the option to transition seamlessly into their own VIKINGCARES Personal Health Plan with no medical questions.
Disabled Children
Disabled dependents can remain covered under your plan if you provide a Government Support Letter confirming their status.
With proper documentation, coverage can remain active without interruption.
Documentation Required
Proof of university enrollment or government support documentation is required to activate or maintain dependent benefits.
Is there waiting periods and deductibles on coverage?
VIKINGCARES plans are designed to be simple and transparent — with no deductibles on any plan.
Some benefits include co-insurance and a standard waiting period for dental.
No Waiting Period on Health Benefits
All health benefits (prescriptions, paramedical, vision, travel, etc.) begin immediately on your selected start date.
If your coverage begins September 1st, you can use your health benefits on September 1st.
Dental claims are eligible from day 1
All new members have no waiting period before dental claims become eligible.
You can enroll in dental right away — claims are eligible from day 1.
Co-Insurance Applies to Certain Benefits
Prescription Drugs
Co-insurance depends on your plan tier:
- Silver: 80%
- Gold: 80%
- Platinum: 90%
Dental
- Basic Services: 80% coverage
- Major Services: 50% coverage
This means you pay the remaining balance after your co-insurance portion, with no deductibles and no hidden fees.
No Deductibles at All
There are no deductibles on any VIKINGCARES plan — for health or dental.
Once your coverage is active, the only out-of-pocket costs are your co-insurance portion (if applicable).
How are my premiums collected?
Premiums are collected monthly by pre-authorized debit.
When you apply, you’ll provide a void cheque or banking information, and your premiums will be automatically withdrawn on the 10th of each month.
What is the amount of each plans Drug Coverage?
Each VIKINGCARES plan includes its own annual prescription drug maximum, and these amounts are the same in every province where the plan is offered.
Platinum Plan
- $10,000 per year
- 90% coverage on eligible prescription drugs
- $5,000 per year
- 80% coverage on eligible prescription drugs
- $2,500 per year
- 80% coverage on eligible prescription drugs
Can my premiums be deducted on my income tax?
In most cases, yes. Because your VIKINGCARES premiums are individually paid (not employer-paid), they may be claimed as a medical expense on your personal income tax return.
However, individual situations can vary, so we recommend confirming your eligibility with your accountant or tax professional.
